Everybody's Fine 2009

Plot:
A retired widower (Robert De Niro), ignored by his grown children, sets off on a road trip to connect with each of them and discovers that for years he’s been turning a blind eye to their problems. He can’t communicate with people, though he’s spent his career manufacturing PVC coating for telephone wires, which his cross-country train rides give him ample opportunity to gaze at out the window. A remake of an Italian drama by Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso), this is sentimental but dramatically solid, its placid themes fortified by De Niro (who could certainly do worse these days) and, as his kids, Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell, and Drew Barrymore. British filmmaker Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine) directed his own script.
